1960 Chevrolet Van

In 1965, Lake Hiawatha purchased this 1960 Chevrolet Step Van from Lake French Cleaners. The blue van was repainted solid red, an siren, warning lights and radio was installed and designated "Unit 643" . The van carried fire equipment that could not be carried on the District's pumpers and was parked outside. When the present fire house was completed, the van was rebuilt by Tom Swartz and Paul Koert. Sporting a new white over red paint job and now designated "Unit 644", the truck became the first fire truck to have this paint combination in Lake Hiawatha. With the arrival of the new truck in 1974 the van was sold to a local resident to transport pigeons.
